A Bengaluru-based startup is bridging the gap between biological scent detection and clinical diagnostics to catch cancer in its earliest stages. Dognosis is developing a non-invasive prescreening tool that leverages the olfactory precision of trained dogs combined with artificial intelligence to analyze human breath samples.

The company is currently conducting a Phase 3 trial, aiming to recruit approximately 10,000 participants across 10 hospitals in India. This follows a Phase 2 study in which Dognosis reported roughly 90% sensitivity for detecting early-stage cancers. According to the company, the results of that Phase 2 study were published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

The Challenge of Scaling Scent

Cancer detection frequently occurs too late for optimal intervention. While it has long been recognized that dogs can detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with malignancy, scaling this biological capability for widespread clinical use has historically been impractical.

To solve this, Dognosis is working to "digitize" canine scent perception. By using AI and specialized sensors, the startup aims to translate the biological responses of dogs into a scalable, data-driven screening method. This approach removes the need for a physical dog to be present at every screening point, allowing the technology to be deployed across diverse healthcare settings.

Impact on Early Detection

If the technology proves successful, it could introduce a low-cost, non-invasive first-line screening method. Such a tool would allow patients to be flagged for risk before they undergo more expensive and invasive diagnostic procedures, such as biopsies or high-resolution imaging. By increasing the rate of early detection, the system has the potential to significantly improve patient survival outcomes across multiple cancer types.

Path to Commercialization

As the 10,000-person trial progresses, the company is moving toward a consumer-facing model. Dognosis aims to launch an at-home prescreening tool in India by 2027. The success of this rollout will depend on the Phase 3 trial results and the ability to maintain high sensitivity levels outside of a controlled clinical environment. This transition from clinical trials to home-based screening represents a significant shift in how early-stage malignancy might be monitored in the general population, potentially democratizing access to high-sensitivity screening tools.
