Korea Life Insurance Association Deploys AI to Automate Regulatory Oversight
The industry body is implementing 'AI Transformation' to modernize complaint management and advertisement reviews.
The Korea Life Insurance Association (KLIA) has launched three new AI-driven systems this month designed to automate repetitive administrative tasks. The move marks a strategic shift toward institutional "AI Transformation (AX)" to modernize the regulatory and administrative framework of South Korea's life insurance sector.
According to the Maeil Business Newspaper, the newly deployed systems target civil complaint management, advertisement review, and internal regulation searches. The civil complaint AI converts consultations into real-time text and classifies complaint types to provide immediate data to counselors. For advertising, the AI performs initial reviews based on existing regulations before a human reviewer makes the final decision. Additionally, the internal regulation AI can search through 136 association regulations to provide specific legal grounds and provisions.
The Shift to Institutional AX
While individual insurance companies have already integrated AI into product development and sales, the KLIA is now applying these technologies at the governing level. The insurance industry is traditionally burdened by a high volume of repetitive review tasks that involve complex legal terms and strict regulations. By moving these functions to an AI-driven model, the association aims to reduce the manual workload associated with institutional oversight.
Industry Implications
This transition is intended to significantly increase productivity and establish a standardized AI infrastructure. By automating core administrative functions, the KLIA creates a blueprint that can be scaled across its member companies. Kim Chul-joo, president of the Life Insurance Association, stated that the goal is to develop AI into a basic infrastructure supporting the association's overall work, while sharing construction experiences and use cases with member companies to enhance the industry's overall use of AI.
Future Roadmap
The current rollout is the first phase of a broader modernization plan. The association intends to expand its AI integration to a total of 17 tasks by 2027. Future implementations are expected to include AI-driven legal reviews, public data verification, and contract reviews, further reducing the reliance on manual processing for the sector's regulatory requirements.
