China is pivoting its artificial intelligence strategy away from a primary focus on cloud-based frontier models toward the integration of "embedded AI" directly into physical goods. This shift leverages the country's massive manufacturing infrastructure to weave AI layers into cars, robotics, and industrial machinery, moving intelligence from remote servers to the devices themselves.
China's dominance in hardware is already evident. In 2024, the country accounted for 54% of the world's industrial robot installations, totaling 295,000 units. This hardware scale is now being paired with compressed, open-weight models from providers like Alibaba and DeepSeek. The practical application of this trend is visible in the automotive sector, where Tesla has integrated DeepSeek and ByteDance’s Doubao models into vehicles sold in China to manage voice commands and generative AI interactions.
The Shift to Local Intelligence
While Western AI competition has largely centered on the race for the most powerful large language models (LLMs) hosted in the cloud, China is utilizing its position as the world's factory to deploy AI locally on devices. By using models like Alibaba's Qwen or DeepSeek R1, manufacturers can reduce latency and enable offline operations. Implications of Architectural Lock-in
