Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers are pivoting toward the development of affordable humanoid robots, applying the same rapid-scaling models that disrupted the automotive industry to the field of embodied AI. This strategic shift leverages existing hardware and AI capabilities to challenge Tesla's Optimus in a bid for global market dominance.
Leading the charge is Xpeng, which secured over US$900 million in its first external funding round for its robotics unit. The investment was led by IDG Capital, with strategic participation from tech giants Alibaba and Tencent. Xpeng is currently developing humanoid robots, including the 'IRON' model, designed to compete directly with Tesla by utilizing the company's established expertise in AI and hardware integration.

This transition is rooted in the historical success of Chinese EV makers, who scaled rapidly by adopting modular platforms and aggressive pricing to undercut legacy automakers.
