Google adds 3D simulations and study hubs to Search and Gemini
The tech giant is pivoting from simple answers to interactive pedagogical tools to capture the student market.
Google has launched a comprehensive suite of AI-powered study tools integrated across Google Search and Gemini to better serve the student demographic. The update transforms the company's AI ecosystem from a source of quick answers into a structured academic assistant.
Google Search now features AI-generated interactive visuals and simulations designed to explain complex topics, such as the pH scale. The search engine also provides customized practice quizzes for high-stakes testing, including SAT preparation. To assist with homework, Google Lens in Search will soon enable students to upload photos of specific problems to receive AI-driven conceptual explanations and identification of their mistakes.
Expanding the Gemini Ecosystem
Within the Gemini app, Google is introducing a dedicated student hub. This centralized space will house study notebooks, flashcards, and practice quizzes, allowing users to organize their academic materials in one location. Gemini's generative capabilities have also been expanded to include functional 3D simulations; for example, students can now generate 3D DNA structures that can be rotated and zoomed for closer inspection.
Furthermore, Gemini Live now supports multi-step research reports—referred to as Deep Research—that operate in the background. Once these reports are completed, the system notifies the user, allowing them to engage in a conversational discussion about the findings.
A Strategic Shift in Pedagogy
This rollout marks a strategic transition for Google as it moves beyond the traditional chatbot model. By embedding interactive pedagogical tools and background research capabilities directly into its core products, Google is attempting to position Gemini as a comprehensive educational platform rather than a simple query tool.
This move is a direct response to intensifying competition from OpenAI and specialized education-focused AI startups such as Knowt and Gauth. By leveraging the existing ubiquity of Google Search, the company aims to make its AI the primary interface for academic learning and study preparation for millions of students globally.

As these tools roll out, the industry will be watching how students integrate these simulations into formal learning workflows. While the technical capabilities of 3D modeling and background research are now confirmed, it remains to be seen how these tools will impact traditional study habits and whether they can effectively replace standalone educational software.
