Instapaper has launched a comprehensive overhaul of its service ecosystem to modernize infrastructure and improve performance. The update includes a completely rebuilt website, the release of Instapaper 10 for iOS, and the introduction of AI-powered voices for Android users.
The new website represents only the second full rewrite of the platform since its 2008 launch. According to the Instapaper team, the new web version loads over 60% faster than its predecessor and introduces a three-column reader optimized for larger screens. To improve productivity, the company added Shift+Click multiselect capabilities and a comprehensive suite of keyboard shortcuts, allowing users to archive articles with 'a' or delete them with 'd'.
A Decade of Evolution
On mobile, the release of Instapaper 10 for iOS marks the biggest update to the app in over a decade. The version introduces a visual redesign dubbed "Liquid Glass," alongside a new Home Screen widget. To enhance readability, Instapaper added four new fonts: Literata, New York, Open Sans, and Atkinson Hyperlegible, the latter of which specifically targets accessibility.
Android users receive a significant technical upgrade via the introduction of AI Voices for text-to-speech. This feature required a full rewrite of the platform's existing TTS system to enable more natural audio playback of saved articles.
Shifting Toward Research
These updates signal a strategic shift for the service, which launched in 2008 as one of the original tools designed to strip web content of ads and distractions. In a market now crowded by competitors like Pocket and native browser reading modes, Instapaper is pivoting from a simple reading queue toward a more robust research and curation tool.
By integrating high-speed performance and power-user features like the three-column layout and keyboard shortcuts, the service addresses long-standing user complaints regarding the flexibility and speed of the original platform. The focus on accessibility through specialized fonts further expands the tool's utility for a broader range of users.

Regarding the scale of the changes, the Instapaper team stated that "each rewrite is a big leap forward in functionality, user experience, and performance; this is our best yet."
