Leidos and CoreWeave to Deploy Sovereign AI Cloud for U.S. Intelligence and Defense

Leidos and CoreWeave announced a collaboration on July 30, 2026, to deliver secure, sovereign AI cloud services to the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC) and the Department of War (DoW). The move aims to accelerate the deployment of high-performance AI capabilities for critical national security missions.

Under the terms of the collaboration, CoreWeave will deploy its AI-native cloud platform within Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs). Leidos will manage the operational layer, taking responsibility for mission integration, data engineering, cyber operations, and secure architecture accreditation support. Jason O’Connor, president of Leidos Intelligence, stated that combining CoreWeave’s platform with mission-grade federal integration expands the nation’s AI superiority.

The Gap in Classified Compute

This partnership follows the launch of CoreWeave Federal, a business unit dedicated to U.S. government agencies. The collaboration addresses a systemic gap in the defense sector: most commercial AI clouds are designed for open internet access and shared regions, making them unsuitable for the strict physical isolation, auditing, and secrecy requirements of classified work.

While CoreWeave provides the specialized compute power, Leidos brings the necessary scale for government integration. With 50,000 employees and $17.2 billion in annual revenue, Leidos provides the institutional infrastructure required to navigate the rigorous accreditation processes of the IC and DoW. Sachin Jain, chief operating officer at CoreWeave, noted that the company intends to extend the capabilities trusted by leading AI organizations to these highly secure government environments.

Strategic Implications for Sovereign AI

This shift toward "sovereign AI" represents a strategic effort to move high-performance GPU compute directly into the most secure environments. By integrating commercial-grade AI stacks into SCIFs, the U.S. government seeks to maintain a competitive edge in operational planning, cyber defense, and intelligence analysis.

For CoreWeave, the move diversifies its client base. The company has seen explosive growth, reporting $2.08 billion in first-quarter revenue—a 112% increase year-over-year—and maintaining a backlog worth $99.4 billion as of March 31, 2026. Expanding into the federal sector reduces the company's reliance on a small number of massive commercial clients, such as Anthropic and Meta.
