Leidos Deploys AI and Autonomy to Combat 'Four Tyrannies' of Pacific Logistics
The ILS2 program integrates a 70-company alliance and predictive software to sustain US forces in contested Indo-Pacific environments.
The U.S. military is overhauling its supply chain strategy in the Indo-Pacific to ensure the continuous flow of critical supplies to US Pacific Command (PACOM) and Special Operations Command Pacific (SOCPAC). By leveraging artificial intelligence and autonomous shipping, the effort seeks to mitigate the inherent geographic and operational hurdles of the region.
At the center of this shift is the Indo-Pacific Logistics and Sustainment Services (ILS2) program, managed by Leidos. The initiative is specifically designed to provide military commanders with viable logistics options when conventional networks are disrupted. To achieve this, Leidos has established the Indo-Pacific Logistics Alliance, a network of more than 70 companies with 14,000 personnel already prepositioned throughout the region.
To accelerate operational tempo, Leidos has partnered with Rune Technologies to implement TyrOS, a predictive logistics software. This AI-enabled decision support system reduces logistics planning time from several hours or days down to mere minutes. Furthermore, the program is moving away from a reliance on large, manned convoys by integrating autonomous surface vessels. The Seahawk and Sea Hunter vessels have already been tested in major fleet exercises, including RIMPAC 2026, with the Seahawk also participating in the Theodore Roosevelt Strike Group's COMPTUEX.
The Challenge of the Four Tyrannies
Logistics in the Pacific are defined by what operators call the "four tyrannies": distance, water, time, and scale. These factors cannot be overcome, only mitigated. The vast distances between friendly ports and the high risk of contested waters make traditional logistics ships vulnerable targets.
Moreover, the region often suffers from communications that are disconnected, denied, intermittent, or low-bandwidth (DDIL). While traditional logistics functions are well-executed during daily campaigning, these responses are often unrehearsed and difficult to execute during a contingency or crisis.
Strategic Implications for the Joint Force
Maintaining a reliable supply of "beans, bullets, and bandages" is essential for the Joint Force's ability to operate in the Indo-Pacific. By shifting toward "non-standard logistics" and asymmetric networks, the U.S. reduces the physical risk to sailors and ensures that forces remain sustained even if primary logistics hubs are targeted or communications are jammed.

As the U.S. continues to pivot toward a more resilient logistics posture, the focus will remain on the scalability of the Indo-Pacific Logistics Alliance and the further integration of autonomous systems.
