Michigan Tech Wins NSF Grant to Build Federal AI and Cybersecurity Workforce

Michigan Technological University has received a grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) to launch the CyberAI Corps Scholarship for Service (CyberAI SFS) program. The initiative aims to bridge a critical talent gap in the federal government by training students at the intersection of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

Under the program's terms, eligible students receive full-ride scholarships to develop advanced expertise in AI and cyber defense. In exchange, recipients must complete government internships and commit to post-graduate employment within the public sector for a period equal to the duration of their scholarship. This service requirement ensures that specialized skills acquired at the university are applied directly to national security interests.

A Strategic Shift in Training

The CyberAI SFS program evolves Michigan Tech's previous CyberCorps Scholarship for Service efforts, which are currently being phased out. This transition aligns with the AI Scholarship for Service Act, a legislative effort supported by U.S. Senator Gary Peters to incentivize students to tackle emerging technological challenges within the public sector. According to Sen. Peters, the act is designed to build a robust federal workforce capable of managing the complexities of modern AI implementation.

Michigan Tech is uniquely positioned to lead this effort as the only institution in Michigan to hold dual designations from the National Security Agency (NSA) as a National Center of Academic Excellence in both Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) and Cyber Research (CAE-R). This standing underscores the university's capacity to integrate high-level research with practical defense training.

Integrating AI training into cybersecurity curricula reflects the evolving nature of global threats. As cyberattacks grow more sophisticated, the federal government requires a workforce capable of implementing ethical AI solutions to protect critical infrastructure and government systems. Yu Cai, a professor of applied computing at Michigan Tech, noted that the program develops more than technical proficiency.
