Startup claims generic drug cocktail can mimic 'young blood' to reverse aging

Generation Lab has unveiled a rejuvenation treatment called "1-Generation" that claims to reverse systemic aging markers. The startup is now recruiting a private cohort of high-profile influencers and longevity doctors for a paid clinical trial.

The treatment consists of a combination of two existing generic drugs administered through weekly injections. According to the company, the cocktail is designed to neutralize aging factors in the bloodstream and stimulate cell regeneration, effectively mimicking the effects of young blood. The drug combination was identified using a microfluidic device that tested human cells exposed to blood serum from elderly individuals.

The Science of Young Blood

The foundation of 1-Generation lies in the research of founder Irina Conboy, a former UC Berkeley professor. Conboy previously studied parabiosis—the surgical linking of the circulatory systems of young and old animals—and therapeutic plasma exchange to rejuvenate aged subjects. While these methods have shown promise in animal models, translating the benefits of "young blood" to humans has proven difficult.

Generation Lab aims to bypass the invasive nature of fluid exchange by using a pharmacological approach. A company fact sheet claims the treatment "blocks the systemic spread of aging in the bloodstream, reawakens the body’s own repair mechanism and restores health and youth to multiple tissues."

Industry Implications

If a combination of generic drugs could safely reverse systemic aging, it would represent a paradigm shift in medicine, moving from treating individual diseases to addressing the biological process of aging itself. However, the approach has drawn scrutiny from the scientific community.

Critics point to significant ethical and scientific red flags, specifically the lack of transparency regarding the identities of the two generic drugs. Furthermore, the company's decision to utilize a "pay-to-play" model—where participants must pay for their own enrollment—diverges from standard clinical trial protocols. The involvement of figures like Matt Cook, founder of BioReset Medical, has also raised questions. Cook, who took the combination himself, told MIT Technology Review that while his initial confidence was "zero," the result was "the most surprising thing that ever happened to me."

What's Next

Generation Lab plans to launch a study involving more than 100 participants who will be required to pay for their enrollment to further test the efficacy of the 1-Generation cocktail. Observers will be watching to see if the company releases peer-reviewed data or maintains its private, paid-enrollment model. Until the specific drug components are disclosed and the results are independently verified, the claims of systemic rejuvenation remain unproven.
