Navajo Nation Establishes AI Policy Working Group to Govern Emerging Tech

The Navajo Nation has taken a formal step to regulate the integration of artificial intelligence within its borders. The Naabik'iyati' Committee of the Navajo Nation Council recently approved Resolution NABIAU-41-26 (Legislation 0182-26), a move that establishes a framework for the governance of AI technology.

According to the Navajo Nation Office of Legislative Services, the approved legislation officially adopts the Navajo Nation Artificial Intelligence Policy Statement. Alongside this policy, the Council has established the Artificial Intelligence Policy Working Group, which is tasked with the ongoing oversight of AI governance across the nation. The legislation was sponsored by Andy Nez.

Legislative Oversight

The action was routed through the Naabik'iyati' Committee, a primary legislative body within the Navajo Nation Council. This committee is responsible for the scrutiny of legislation and the general oversight of government operations. By utilizing this established legislative path, the Nation is integrating AI governance into its existing administrative and legal structures.

Asserting Tribal Sovereignty

This move represents a strategic effort by the Navajo Nation to assert tribal sovereignty over the deployment and regulation of artificial intelligence.
