Singapore Medical Director Urges Radiologists to Pivot to Interventional Care Amid AI Rise

Dr. Ang Peng Tiam, a senior consultant and medical director at Singapore's Parkway Cancer Center, is advising aspiring radiologists to avoid diagnostic specialties in favor of interventional radiology. The warning comes as artificial intelligence continues to advance in pattern recognition and image analysis.

Speaking on September 4 during the 20th anniversary celebration of the Parkway Cancer Center, Dr. Ang explicitly urged students to shift their focus. "If anyone wants to do radiology, you should not do diagnostic radiology. You must be an interventional radiologist," Dr. Ang stated. He argued that the traditional task of reading X-rays and other diagnostic imaging will eventually be handled entirely by computers and AI.

The Shift to Interventional Care

While diagnostic radiology focuses on interpreting images to identify diseases, interventional radiology is a specialized branch that uses imaging to guide minimally invasive procedures. This includes performing biopsies, conducting angiograms, and blocking blood vessels. Because these tasks require physical precision and real-time manual intervention, they remain outside the current capabilities of autonomous AI systems.

Dr. Ang, who completed his medical oncology fellowship at the MD Anderson center in Houston, views this distinction as critical for the long-term viability of a medical career. By focusing on the procedural side of the field, practitioners can provide value that software cannot replicate.

This perspective reflects a broader anxiety within the healthcare sector regarding the displacement of specialists by machine learning. The core value of diagnostic radiology—the ability to spot anomalies in complex imagery—is precisely where AI has shown the most rapid improvement. As algorithms become more adept at identifying markers of disease, the professional necessity for a human to act as the primary "reader" of a scan diminishes.
