Current and former researchers from the world's leading AI laboratories are calling for an immediate slowdown in development, warning that the race toward artificial general intelligence poses an existential threat to humanity. The alarm intensified after Jacob Coxon resigned from Anthropic, accusing AI labs of "gambling with our lives." His concerns are echoed by other senior figures, including Anthropic alignment lead Evan Hubinger, who estimates there is a more than 10% chance that AI could cause the extinction of all humans within the next ten years. The Threat of Recursive Improvement

Anna Wang, an AGI safety and alignment researcher at Anthropic, stated that there is currently no viable scientific plan to solve the risks associated with recursively self-improving AI.

Corporate Growth vs. Technical Safety

These warnings highlight a deepening schism between the corporate objectives of AI labs and the technical realities identified by their researchers. While CEOs publicly advocate for regulation, the industry remains locked in a fierce competitive race for market dominance. This tension has created internal friction, as safety leads argue that the drive for growth is overriding the necessary caution required to manage superintelligent systems.

The Path to Intervention

Because the warnings are coming from the primary architects of the technology, the situation has created a critical imperative for government intervention. The industry's internal instability suggests that self-regulation is insufficient. Observers are now looking toward legislative frameworks, such as the FRONTIER Act or the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, to impose hard limits on development speeds.

What remains to be seen is whether the U.S. government will act on the researchers' pleas or if the momentum of the AI race will continue to outpace the development of safety protocols. For now, the gap between the capabilities of models like Mythos 5 and the scientific ability to control them remains a primary point of failure.
