US Targets $61 Million in Binance Crypto Linked to Iranian Oil Laundering
The Department of Justice is seeking forfeiture of funds allegedly moved by Chinese firms to bypass sanctions on Iranian petroleum.
The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking the forfeiture of approximately $61 million in cryptocurrency held in Binance accounts. The move targets funds the government alleges are proceeds from the black-market sale of Iranian petroleum to buyers in China.
According to the DOJ, the cryptocurrency—specifically USDT—is linked to sanctioned Iranian entities. The complaint identifies two Chinese companies, Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale, which allegedly utilized Binance accounts to launder the proceeds from these illicit oil sales. This specific seizure effort is part of a much larger investigation into a crypto trail involving more than $1.5 billion in illegal proceeds received by a group of wallets linked to Iran.
A Pattern of Regulatory Friction
This action comes as Binance continues to navigate a fraught relationship with U.S. regulators. The exchange has a documented history of legal settlements with U.S. authorities, most notably a $4.3 billion settlement involving the DOJ, FinCEN, and the CFTC. While previous settlements focused on broader anti-money laundering and KYC failures, this current action highlights a specific, ongoing vulnerability: the use of digital asset exchanges to evade targeted international sanctions.
The Geopolitics of Crypto Evasion
This case underscores the critical role cryptocurrency now plays in sanction evasion for state actors. By utilizing stablecoins and global exchanges, sanctioned regimes can move vast sums of capital with a speed and opacity that traditional banking systems—which are more easily monitored by the U.S. Treasury—cannot match. By targeting both the financial infrastructure of the exchange and the intermediaries, such as the Chinese firms in this case, the U.S. aims to disrupt the funding streams that support Iran's military capabilities and nuclear program.
Monitoring the Trail
Federal authorities are now focused on the broader network of wallets that moved the estimated $1.5 billion in oil profits. While the current forfeiture request targets a $61 million slice of that total, the investigation suggests a systemic pipeline between Iranian energy exports and Chinese crypto-intermediaries. It remains to be seen if the DOJ will bring further charges against the executives of Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale or if additional seizures will be pursued across other exchanges.
