Anthropic adds invisible watermarks to Claude to meet EU transparency rules

Anthropic has introduced invisible watermarking for text and C2PA-based provenance metadata for files generated by its Claude AI models to comply with new international transparency standards. The move ensures that AI-generated content can be identified even after being copied or edited.
Starting August 2, 2026, all Claude models released on or after that date automatically include these watermarks. For files and images, Anthropic is utilizing the C2PA open standard to embed provenance metadata. While the rollout is a direct response to the EU AI Act's Transparency Code—specifically Article 50, which became enforceable on August 2—the system is being applied to Claude users globally, not just those within the European Union.
