Boston Startup Reservoir Raises $8M to Turn Water Heaters Into Grid Assets

The company is launching AI-powered heat pump water heaters and its own plumbing arm to accelerate home electrification.

Boston-based startup Reservoir has raised $8 million in seed funding to deploy AI-driven water heaters that optimize energy use for both homeowners and the electrical grid. The round was led by Asymmetric Capital Partners, with participation from MCJ and Founder Collective.

The company's flagship product is a heat pump water heater that is nearly four times more efficient than traditional electric models and five times more efficient than natural gas versions. To remove the friction of adoption, Reservoir has launched its own plumbing company to manage the installation process. The hardware is available in two tiers: a "Core" model priced at $5,000 and a "Max" model at $6,500, both of which include installation costs.

The Intelligence Gap in Home Heating

Water heating is a significant energy drain, typically accounting for roughly 18% of a household's total energy budget. While heat pump technology has existed for years, it has struggled to achieve mainstream success due to slow recovery times and a lack of smart integration. Reservoir aims to bridge this gap by treating the water heater as a "thermal asset" rather than a passive appliance.

To achieve this, the system utilizes a one-month training period to learn a household's specific usage patterns, allowing it to predict demand and heat water proactively. The hardware also includes ultrasonic flow sensors for leak detection and a specialized "party mode," which enables a standard 50-gallon tank to deliver up to 150 gallons of hot water during high-demand events. "The typical water heater is devoid of intelligence, it’s using a god-awful amount of energy, and my air fryer is smarter than it," said Luke Winston-Almanzar, co-founder and CEO of Reservoir.

Stabilizing the Grid

Beyond individual home savings, the broader goal is to aggregate these intelligent heaters into a distributed network. By coordinating a fleet of devices, Reservoir can participate in utility demand response programs, effectively turning residential water heaters into a distributed battery for the electrical grid. This allows the company to reduce peak demand on the grid, which helps stabilize energy infrastructure while potentially lowering costs for the end user.

This approach shifts the value proposition of sustainable home upgrades from purely environmental to functional and financial. According to Winston-Almanzar, "The sustainable product need to just be the better product."

The Path to Electrification

As cities push for all-electric building codes, the ability to manage peak loads becomes critical to preventing grid failure. Reservoir's model suggests that the transition to electric homes can be accelerated if the appliances themselves help manage the load they create. The company will now focus on scaling its installation capacity through its internal plumbing arm to move these units from the lab into residential basements.
