A new interactive web application allows users to travel the world sonically by rotating a 3D globe to discover environmental field recordings. Earth Garden transforms geographic exploration into an auditory experience, enabling users to jump from the sound of rainfall in Manhattan to crickets in Tanzania with a simple swipe.
Developed by Alen and hosted at alen.ro, the tool sources its audio library from Freesound, a collaborative database of audio samples. The interface is heavily inspired by Radio Garden, a popular tool for exploring live radio broadcasts globally. Earth Garden adapts this global exploration UI to environmental soundscapes, allowing users to pinpoint specific locations and listen to the ambient noise of that region. To enhance the experience, the application includes an automatic rotation mode that seamlessly transitions sounds as the reticle passes over different geographic points. Additionally, users can layer generic ambient drones into the background of these recordings via a SomaFM Drone Zone stream.
The role of field recordings
Field recordings have long been a cornerstone of ambient music and sound art, frequently utilized for active listening or as functional background noise to aid in focus and sleep. By mapping these recordings to a physical representation of the Earth, Earth Garden moves the medium from a static list of files to a spatial journey.
