Google has appointed Koray Kavukcuoglu as Senior Vice President leading Google DeepMind, effective August 5, 2026. The move signals a major reorganization of the company's AI efforts as it struggles to maintain its lead in the frontier model race.
Kavukcuoglu, who previously served as the unit's CTO and Google's chief AI architect, now oversees Gemini model development and frontier AI research. In this new capacity, he reports directly to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. He replaces co-founder Demis Hassabis, who has transitioned from the CEO role to become the Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet.
The Competitive Landscape
This leadership shift comes at a critical juncture for Google's AI ambitions. While the company released Gemini 3.1 Pro on February 19, 2026, it has faced intensifying pressure from rivals. The primary objective for the new leadership is to eliminate the performance disparities between Google's offerings and those of its primary competitors. "The goal will undoubtedly be to close the gaps with Anthropic and OpenAI in some areas," noted Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight.
