Google mandates Android app memory cuts to combat AI-driven chip shortages

Google is introducing strict new app quality requirements for the Play Store to curb excessive memory usage and improve device migration. The move aims to prevent system-wide slowdowns as the mobile industry grapples with hardware supply constraints.

Under the new guidelines, developers must meet specific performance thresholds for bitmap memory usage, dynamic memory usage—specifically anonymous RSS and swap—and DEX code optimization. To ensure efficiency, apps are now required to maintain at least 25% coverage across obfuscation, shrinking, and optimization for DEX code, utilizing tools such as R8. Google has set a deadline of February 2027 for apps to meet these memory and code optimization standards. Additionally, apps featuring user sign-ins must implement a "Zero Tap Sign-In" system via the Android Restore Credentials API by April 2027. Failure to comply with these mandates may lead to limited publishing capabilities or reduced visibility within the Google Play Store.

These requirements arrive as the global AI boom triggers a massive surge in demand for high-end memory chips in data centers. This shift has created significant supply constraints across the broader mobile industry, particularly affecting the production of low-end Android devices.
