Heart Aerospace has successfully completed the first test flight of the X1, the world's largest battery-electric aircraft. The milestone flight took place on August 12, 2026, at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York, marking a significant step toward the commercialization of electric aviation.

The aircraft remained airborne for approximately 27 minutes, reaching a maximum altitude of 1,100 feet. During the mission, the X1 delivered more than one megawatt (MW) of power, while the total energy cost for the flight was approximately $5. Path to the ES-30

The X1 serves as a critical technology demonstrator for Heart Aerospace's primary production goal: the ES-30. Unlike the all-electric X1, the ES-30 is designed as a hybrid-electric regional airliner capable of carrying up to 30 passengers. The company has established a rigorous development timeline for the production model, with flight testing scheduled to begin in 2028 and a target entry into commercial service by 2031.

Industry Implications

This flight demonstrates the technical feasibility of electric propulsion at a scale relevant to commercial aviation. By transitioning away from traditional combustion engines, Heart Aerospace expects the ES-30 to reduce aircraft operating costs by more than 40% compared to legacy regional aircraft. These savings are expected to stem from significantly lower energy costs, simplified maintenance requirements, and increased overall system reliability.
