LG Display Unveils FLiPP Technology to Eliminate OLED Manufacturing Bottlenecks

The new FMM-less patterning process boosts brightness and lifespan while slashing power consumption.

LG Display has introduced a new manufacturing method called FLiPP (FMM-Less innovative Pixel Patterning) that removes the physical constraints of traditional OLED production. Unveiled at IMID 2026 in Busan, the technology replaces physical masks with a precision UV light etching process to create more efficient and durable panels.

According to LG Display, the FLiPP process delivers substantial performance gains over panels produced using traditional Fine Metal Masks (FMM). Under identical conditions, FLiPP-produced panels increase brightness by 1.6 times and extend operational lifespan by 2.4 times. Additionally, the technology reduces power consumption by 13%. These gains are driven by a photolithography-based approach that improves the aperture ratio—the proportion of the display area occupied by RGB pixels—by approximately 55%.

The End of the Metal Mask

For more than a decade, the OLED industry has relied on FMM, a stencil-like process where organic materials are evaporated through tiny holes in a metal mask. While effective for small screens, FMMs are expensive to replace when changing display sizes and are prone to sagging in larger panels. This physical instability often leads to misalignment and color-mixing defects, creating a ceiling for how large and high-quality OLED panels can be produced efficiently.

LG Display developed FLiPP to move away from this physical limitation. By utilizing UV light etching, the company can now use 8.5th-generation mother glass as a single whole piece. For OLED laptop panels specifically, this results in mother glass utilization efficiency that is up to 64% higher than that of divided substrates.

Industry Implications

This shift removes the primary physical bottleneck of OLED scaling. By eliminating mask-related defects and increasing the aperture ratio, LG can lower manufacturing costs while simultaneously addressing the core weaknesses of OLED technology: brightness and longevity.

Choi Young-seok, CTO at LG Display, described FLiPP as a “dream technology,” noting that the company realized the patterning method by combining its proprietary WOLED technologies and internal know-how. The ability to produce brighter, more efficient screens without the cost overhead of massive metal masks makes high-end OLED more viable for a broader range of consumer electronics.

Future Scalability

Because the process is based on photolithography rather than physical stencils, it is theoretically scalable to virtually any size. LG Display indicates the technology can be applied to devices ranging from 1-inch wearables to 100-inch ultra-large televisions, as well as specialized displays for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headsets. The industry will now watch to see how quickly FLiPP moves from a technical unveiling to mass-market production lines.
