Meta's Muse AI Agent Hits No. 2 on iOS App Store Amid Modest Debut

The new 'agentic' tool marks a strategic shift toward autonomous workflows but trails previous Meta launches in total downloads.

Meta released Muse, a personal AI agent designed to execute real-world tasks, on September 8, 2026. The launch marks a strategic shift for the company toward autonomous tools that manage digital workflows rather than simply providing information.

By September 10, Muse climbed to the No. 2 position on the U.S. iOS App Store. However, the app's initial adoption figures are modest compared to Meta's previous hits. Muse recorded over 83,000 iOS downloads in the U.S. at launch, a sharp contrast to the 4.3 million downloads Threads saw on its debut day and the 108,000 recorded by the Meta AI app. Performance on other platforms has been more muted; the Android version ranked No. 338 in the Productivity category on Google Play. Currently, the service is limited to the U.S. market across iOS, Android, and the web.

The Shift to Agentic AI

Muse is powered by the Muse Spark 1.3 model and utilizes a dedicated "Muse Secure VM" to isolate user data for privacy. Unlike traditional chatbots, Meta describes Muse as a tool that "actually does the work," integrating with third-party services such as Spotify and OpenTable to perform actions on behalf of the user.

This pivot places Meta in direct competition with a growing field of "agentic AI" developers. Key rivals include Google's Gemini Spark and Anthropic's Claude Cowork, as well as the startup Instinct, which currently holds a valuation of $2.5 billion. The industry is moving toward tools capable of negotiating bills, booking travel, and managing emails autonomously.

Market Barriers and Headwinds

The disparity in download volume between Muse and social-centric apps like Threads suggests a higher barrier to entry for agentic tools. Because these agents require deeper access to personal data and higher levels of user trust to function, they may not experience the same viral growth as communication platforms.

External pressures may also be playing a role in the rollout. Meta recently agreed to an $18 billion multistate settlement concerning social media harms to children, a legal burden that coincides with the agent's debut.

What to Watch

As Muse iterates, the industry will be watching whether Meta can scale user trust to increase adoption rates. While the iOS ranking shows strong initial curiosity, the long-term success of the product depends on whether users are willing to hand over the "keys" to their digital lives to an autonomous agent. It remains to be seen if Meta will expand the service beyond the U.S. or introduce further third-party integrations to increase the tool's utility.
