Nepal Deploys Heavy-Lift DJI Drones for Flood Relief and Body Recovery
China-donated cargo drones provide critical last-mile logistics in rugged Himalayan terrain following a catastrophic glacier collapse.
The Nepal army has deployed a fleet of heavy-lift DJI FlyCart 100 drones to deliver emergency aid and recover deceased victims following devastating flash floods. The operation is targeting inaccessible high-altitude regions where traditional ground access has been severed by mud and debris.
Following a partial glacier collapse on August 26, 2026, the Nepal-Tibet border region was struck by a sudden surge of water and debris. As of September 9, the official death toll in Nepal reached 1,369, with more than 5,000 people reported missing. To combat the logistical nightmare of the rugged terrain, the army is utilizing four DJI FlyCart 100 drones donated by China, which are currently performing between 10 and 16 aid deliveries every day.
The Himalayan Crisis
The disaster was triggered when a section of a Himalayan glacier collapsed, sending a torrent of mud and water through valley communities, border crossings, and hydropower projects. The resulting landscape has left many survivors stranded in remote areas. In addition to the heavy-lift cargo drones, smaller search-and-rescue drones have been utilized to locate survivors. Drone pilot and filmmaker Manish Maharjan reported using drones equipped with microphone speakers to call out to potential survivors trapped on hillsides and within hydropower tunnels.
A Shift in Disaster Logistics
This deployment marks a significant shift toward autonomous logistics in humanitarian aid, specifically for "last-mile" delivery in extreme environments. The ability to airlift both life-saving supplies and deceased victims in areas where roads have been completely destroyed demonstrates the critical utility of heavy-lift UAVs. By bypassing destroyed infrastructure, these drones provide a reliable link to isolated populations that would otherwise be unreachable by vehicle or foot.
Future Outlook
As recovery efforts continue, the integration of autonomous aerial systems into national disaster response frameworks is expected to grow. While the immediate focus remains on locating the thousands of missing persons, the success of the FlyCart 100 operation provides a blueprint for future responses to glacier-lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in the region. Authorities continue to monitor the unstable terrain as they work to account for the missing, including hundreds of foreign nationals.
