The group began their journey on August 29, establishing an illegal base camp near Clear Creek's head springs before starting their climb at 3 AM on August 30. To prepare, the hikers used a combination of YouTube, AllTrails, and Gemini AI. However, the AI provided critically flawed guidance: it told the climbers the trek would take only eight hours, when the actual ascent took approximately 16 hours. Furthermore, the AI advised the group to pack simple carbohydrates instead of fats, claiming that fats "take too long to digest."

A Dangerous Timeline

Because of the AI's underestimated timeline, the group reached the summit around 7 PM on August 30. This was seven hours past the recommended 12 PM turnaround time, leaving them to begin their descent in the dark. The situation deteriorated rapidly when their primary navigation phone died and a backup battery failed. Without a working GPS, the climbers wandered off-route and became lost in Mud Creek Canyon.

Ill-prepared for an unplanned overnight stay, the group lacked warm clothing, emergency shelter, and sufficient food and water. They spent a night exposed to the elements on the mountain before forest rangers were able to locate and rescue them. Reflecting on the ordeal, the climbers admitted they relied too much on AI rather than their own critical thinking.
