Opendoor Co-Founder Eric Wu Launches NavigateAI to Fight Construction Labor Shortage

Eric Wu, co-founder of Opendoor, has launched NavigateAI to provide AI-driven copilots for construction and field workers. The startup aims to mitigate a severe labor shortage in the trades by using artificial intelligence to upskill existing workers and automate quality control.
Emerging from stealth on May 26, 2026, NavigateAI raised $25 million in seed funding at a $225 million post-money valuation. The round was led by Elad Gil, with participation from Khosla Ventures, Fifth Wall, Lennar, Tishman Speyer, and Helix Electric. The product provides real-time, hands-free guidance through smartphones and Meta's AI glasses, allowing workers to verify installations and access technical specifications on-site. To ensure hardware viability, NavigateAI is working with Meta to get the glasses safety-certified for construction environments. Additionally, the company partnered with AIM, a Meta-backed fiber installation trade school, to integrate these tools into worker training.
The Infrastructure Crunch
The construction industry is grappling with a critical labor shortage driven by an aging workforce and aggressive immigration enforcement. This shortage is particularly acute for the development of massive AI data centers. Modern projects require significantly more manpower—between 4,000 and 5,000 workers—compared to previous generations of server farms, which typically required around 750 workers. For example, Meta's Hyperion campus in Louisiana requires roughly 5,000 construction workers, while OpenAI's Stargate site in Texas has involved 6,400 workers.
Shifting the Economic Model
Beyond the technology, NavigateAI is experimenting with how AI services are monetized in the industrial sector. The company has shifted its business model away from traditional usage-based SaaS. Instead, it operates on a "share of value created" model, where the company captures a percentage of the actual cost savings it generates for clients—such as 20% of the savings realized through increased efficiency or reduced errors.
Future Implications
If successful, NavigateAI could drastically reduce the timelines and costs associated with building critical infrastructure. However, the company's ambitions extend beyond immediate productivity gains. Its long-term strategy involves building a massive dataset of labeled egocentric video of field work. This real-world "how-to" data could eventually be sold to robotics companies to provide the foundational training necessary for the next generation of physical robots.
Regarding his motivation for entering the space, Wu stated, "I knew if I looked back in 10 years and didn’t do something related to it, I’d probably regret that."
