The founders of orbital data center startup Starcloud have launched a non-profit organization, Fermi Explorer, to send a small spacecraft to Alpha Centauri. The mission represents a strategic pivot in private space exploration, prioritizing a guaranteed historical first over the pursuit of speculative, high-speed propulsion.

Led by Philip Johnston, Adi Oltean, and Ezra Feilden, with program manager Garret Jameson, the project intends to launch a 1-kilogram spacecraft featuring a 10 cm square payload. The mission is budgeted at $15 million and targets a 2029 launch date. Rather than relying on unproven breakthroughs, the probe will utilize a rocket rideshare and low-power electric propulsion to exit the solar system. The spacecraft is designed to remain active for approximately 12 years before entering a final coast phase, with a projected travel time of roughly 80,000 years.

A Shift in Interstellar Strategy

This approach marks a departure from previous high-budget interstellar ambitions. Breakthrough Starshot, a prominent initiative that sought to use laser-based propulsion to reach Alpha Centauri within a human lifetime, reportedly collapsed in 2025. While Starshot focused on the technological hurdle of extreme speed, Fermi Explorer differentiates itself by abandoning the requirement for a rapid arrival. By accepting a multi-millennial journey, the team can utilize existing space technology to ensure the probe actually leaves the solar system.

The Logic of the Long Game

By shifting the goal from a human-lifetime arrival to a "minimum viable" interstellar journey, the project bypasses the billion-dollar research and development costs associated with advanced propulsion. The mission is intended to test the limits of the Fermi paradox—the contradiction between the high probability of extraterrestrial civilizations and the lack of evidence for them.

Philip Johnston noted that the 80,000-year timeline was a deliberate choice for the mission's viability. He argued that the durability of the craft is a manageable challenge, stating, "If a dinosaur bone can last 200 million years then a metal box can easily survive the radiation environment we expect for 50,000 years."
