Tesla Discontinues Solar Roof After Years of Production Struggles

The company is pivoting exclusively to conventional solar panels after the integrated tile product failed to reach scale.

Tesla has officially discontinued its Solar Roof tile product, scrubbing the offering from its website and redirecting the product page to its generic solar panels landing page. The move signals the end of a long-term effort to integrate energy production directly into building materials.

According to reports from TechCrunch and Electrek, Tesla has informed third-party installers that it will no longer supply solar roof tiles. The company is now focusing its energy resources exclusively on conventional solar panels. The decision comes after the product failed to achieve meaningful market penetration. While Tesla had set a target of 1,000 installations per week, data from Wood Mackenzie shows the product peaked at only 21 to 32 installations per week. Over approximately seven years, Tesla is estimated to have installed only about 3,000 Solar Roof systems across the United States.

A struggle for viability

Unveiled in 2016, the Solar Roof was a cornerstone of the narrative used to justify Tesla's $2.6 billion acquisition of SolarCity. The product was positioned as a luxury alternative to traditional solar arrays, replacing standard roofing tiles with photovoltaic cells. However, the ambition of the design was met with severe manufacturing and technical hurdles.

Confirmed reports indicate the product suffered from significant technical failures, including the warping of non-solar components and the melting of roof underlayment. Furthermore, the systems suffered from electricity underproduction, likely caused by efficiency losses induced by heat. These complexities prevented Tesla from achieving the economies of scale that have made standardized solar panels a viable mass-market commodity. A source close to the program told Electrek that Tesla ultimately concluded the product was not financially viable.

The BIPV challenge

The failure of the Solar Roof underscores the immense difficulty of Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV). While the aesthetic appeal of invisible solar is high, the integration of energy production into structural building materials creates a level of complexity that standardized add-on systems avoid. For Tesla, the cost of overcoming these engineering hurdles outweighed the market demand for a luxury roofing solution.

What remains

Despite Tesla's retreat, the concept of integrated solar persists. Competitors such as GAF and Merlin Solar continue to pursue the BIPV market, suggesting that while Tesla could not make the economics work, the industry still sees potential in the category. For now, Tesla customers seeking solar energy are limited to the company's conventional panel offerings, marking a pragmatic shift away from one of Elon Musk's most visually ambitious energy projects.
