VMware VCF 9.1 expands memory tiering to combat rising DRAM costs
New updates to VMware Cloud Foundation allow enterprises to shift cold data to NVMe storage, increasing VM density and reducing TCO.
VMware is expanding its memory tiering technology within VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) to help enterprises manage the escalating costs of server hardware and DRAM. This software-defined approach allows operators to run more virtual machines on existing physical hosts by utilizing fast NVMe storage as a secondary memory tier.
In the VCF 9.1 update, VMware introduced performance optimizations for database workloads and new activity dashboards to help administrators manage memory movement. The technology identifies "cold pages"—data currently unused in the system's DRAM—and migrates them to NVMe drives. This process prevents CPU idling and enables higher densification of virtual machines per server, allowing companies to defer expensive hardware refreshes.
The hardware cost squeeze
This push toward tiering comes as the AI boom drives a surge in the price of DRAM and SSDs, leading to higher capital expenditures and longer lead times for server hardware. By treating NVMe storage as an extension of system memory, VMware aims to mitigate the financial impact of these price hikes. This strategy provides a path for enterprises to extend the lifecycle of current hardware assets while maintaining performance.
Performance and TCO gains
To ensure stability and speed, VMware has set strict hardware requirements for the NVMe drives used in this tiering process. Drives must support at least 100,000 writes per second and 7,300 TB of lifetime writes, with a recommended Drive Writes Per Day (DWPD) of at least three.
When these specifications are met, the efficiency gains are substantial. VMware claims that implementing a 1:1 DRAM-to-NVMe ratio can result in 30% fewer CPU cycles being consumed. More importantly for the bottom line, the company asserts that this configuration can lead to a 40% lower total cost of ownership (TCO) compared to traditional memory-heavy deployments.
The long-term roadmap
While VCF 9.1 focuses on database performance and visibility, VMware is expanding the scope of the technology. Dave Morera, Staff Technical Marketing Architect, stated that the company has a "two-to-three year roadmap" for the feature set.
Future iterations are expected to broaden support for a wider variety of workloads and larger configurations. Industry observers are watching for the ability to support "monster VMs"—those requiring up to 960 vCPUs and 16TB of RAM—as well as integration with Microsoft's Radius cloud-native platform. These additions would further solidify memory tiering as a primary tool for managing the economics of large-scale virtualization in an era of volatile hardware pricing.
