Amazon Hits $3 Trillion Valuation as AWS AI Growth Accelerates

The e-commerce giant joins an elite group of $3 trillion companies following a blowout second-quarter report driven by cloud demand.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · August 5, 2026

Amazon's market capitalization surpassed $3 trillion for the first time on Monday, August 3, 2026. The milestone follows a sharp rally in shares triggered by a second-quarter earnings report that highlighted accelerating growth within its cloud computing division.

Driven by the artificial intelligence boom, Amazon reported total Q2 revenue of approximately $200.6 billion. The primary catalyst was Amazon Web Services (AWS), which saw revenue jump 36.7% year-over-year—its fastest expansion in 18 quarters. This surge has pushed AWS to an annualized revenue run rate of $169 billion, while the division's contract backlog has climbed to $496 billion. CEO Andy Jassy noted that the company's AI and chips businesses have each eclipsed run rates of more than $25 billion.

Overcoming Investor Skepticism

This valuation peak marks a significant turnaround for the company. Between May and July 2026, Amazon's shares slid nearly 18% as investors questioned whether massive capital expenditures on AI infrastructure would ever translate into profitable growth. The recent financial results have largely calmed these fears regarding the return on invested capital, suggesting that the "AI tide" is effectively lifting the cloud business.

A New Era for Cloud Monetization

This milestone validates the monetization of generative AI across the cloud sector. By crossing the $3 trillion threshold, Amazon joins an elite group of companies including Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Nvidia. The move reflects a broader market conviction that AI-powered cloud computing is entering a new era of scalable revenue. According to Dan Morgan, a portfolio manager at Synovus Trust, the results put to bed concerns regarding market share losses and provide evidence that the lead held by AWS remains intact.

Strategic Expansion

To further deepen its footprint in the AI ecosystem, Amazon and OpenAI recently announced a strategic partnership involving a $38 billion deal for AI infrastructure capacity. As the hyperscale cloud market expands, investors will be watching to see if this infrastructure investment continues to drive the high growth rates seen in the second quarter and whether the company can maintain its momentum against other trillion-dollar rivals.
