Equinix Raises 2026 Guidance as AI Workloads Drive Record Interconnection Growth

The digital infrastructure giant reports double-digit MRR growth and accelerates capacity expansion to meet surging enterprise AI demand.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · August 5, 2026

Equinix reported stronger-than-expected second-quarter 2026 results, signaling a structural acceleration in digital infrastructure demand. The company is leveraging a surge in enterprise AI workloads to drive record interconnection levels and raise its long-term financial outlook.

Financial performance for the quarter was marked by an 11% year-over-year increase in monthly recurring revenue (MRR) on a normalized and constant-currency basis. This represents the third consecutive quarter of double-digit growth for the firm. Annualized gross bookings climbed 23% year-over-year to $424 million, the second-highest volume in the company's history. Additionally, Equinix added a record 9,700 net interconnections during the period. Following these results, the company raised its full-year 2026 revenue growth expectations to 11-12% and adjusted its adjusted funds from operations (AFFO) per share growth target to 10-12%.

The Shift to AI-Native Infrastructure

This growth phase is rooted in the transition toward AI-native workloads. As enterprises deploy large language models and "AI factories," there is an increasing requirement for low-latency, sovereign, and highly interconnected infrastructure. To meet this demand, Equinix is aggressively expanding its capacity, pulling forward more than 7,000 cabinets originally scheduled for 2027 into the fourth quarter of 2026. CEO and President Adaire Fox-Martin noted that the "AI-driven infrastructure cycle continues to accelerate."

Implications for the AI Economy

These results suggest that AI demand has evolved beyond the initial hyperscale phase and is now penetrating the broader enterprise market. Equinix is positioning itself as the critical interconnection layer for the AI economy; currently, eight of the top 10 AI model providers and eight of the top 10 neoclouds run key networking workloads on its platform. By providing the physical environment where these diverse providers meet, Equinix is capturing the value created by the need for sovereign AI and modernized on-premise infrastructure.

Long-Term Outlook

Looking ahead, Equinix has extended its long-term guidance through 2029, projecting annual revenue growth between 10-13% and AFFO per share growth between 9-12%. While the company's shares fell 3% following the announcement—attributed to a softer forecast for the third quarter—the extended guidance suggests a permanent shift in data center demand. Investors will likely monitor whether the accelerated cabinet rollout in late 2026 can keep pace with the rapid adoption of enterprise AI networking.
