NFPA Warns AI Boom Is Leading Data Center Operators to Ignore Safety Codes
A terminology gap in fire and electrical standards is causing developers to overlook critical safety frameworks as digital infrastructure scales.
The rapid expansion of AI and cloud computing is pushing data center capacity to unprecedented levels, but critical safety protocols are being overlooked. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is now moving to educate the industry on established codes that govern these facilities to prevent avoidable disasters.
Jonathan Hart, Technical Lead at the NFPA, stated that many of the fire, life, and electrical safety considerations associated with data centers are already addressed by existing NFPA codes and standards. The primary benchmark is NFPA 75, the Standard for Fire Protection of Information Technology Equipment. This central standard is formally referenced by both NFPA 1 (Fire Code) and NFPA 5000 (Building Construction and Safety Code).
The Terminology Gap
A significant hurdle in adoption is a disconnect in language. Because NFPA 1 and NFPA 5000 do not explicitly use the term "data center" when referencing NFPA 75, some developers and operators mistakenly believe that no specific standards exist for their facilities. This terminology gap has led stakeholders to overlook a comprehensive framework that covers essential safety areas, including construction, separation, electrical systems, detection and alarm systems, fire suppression, and emergency response planning.
A Multi-Standard Framework
Ensuring the resilience of modern digital infrastructure requires more than a single document. According to the NFPA, a comprehensive safety framework for data centers involves a suite of integrated standards. This includes NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) and NFPA 70B for electrical equipment maintenance, as well as NFPA 72 for fire alarm and signaling.
Physical protection and power redundancy are further governed by NFPA 13 for sprinkler systems, NFPA 110 and 111 for emergency power, and NFPA 2001 for clean agent fire extinguishing systems. Additionally, as facilities integrate more power solutions, NFPA 855 provides the necessary guidelines for stationary energy storage.

As the surge in AI increases the urgency for safe design, the failure to adopt these existing codes poses a direct risk to personnel and property. Beyond immediate safety, strict adherence to these standards is critical for maintaining business continuity.
