Nvidia Acquires Hugging Face in $13 Billion Bet on Open-Source AI
The chip giant moves beyond hardware to own the primary distribution hub for AI models and datasets.
Nvidia has officially agreed to acquire Hugging Face, the premier open-source AI model hub, in a deal valued between $12.9 billion and $13 billion. The acquisition marks a pivotal shift for Nvidia as it expands its dominance from the hardware layer into the software and distribution ecosystem of artificial intelligence.
The companies made the deal official on Thursday morning, confirming a strategic move to integrate Hugging Face—often described as the "GitHub for AI"—into Nvidia's portfolio. Hugging Face serves as the industry's central repository for open AI models, libraries, and datasets, making it the primary destination for developers building and deploying machine learning applications.
A Strategic Expansion
This acquisition follows a period of unprecedented financial growth for Nvidia. According to its fiscal Q2 2027 report, the company saw total revenue surge to $96.2 billion, a 106% increase year-over-year. This growth was driven largely by its Data Center division, which reported revenue of approximately $89 billion, up 117% over the previous year.
Nvidia is not a stranger to the Hugging Face ecosystem; the company previously acted as a strategic investor, participating in a funding round in 2023. By moving from investor to owner, Nvidia now gains direct control over the distribution layer where AI models are discovered and shared, effectively bridging the gap between its GPUs and the final deployment of AI software.
The Impact on Open Source
The deal transforms Nvidia from a provider of the "shovels"—the GPUs required to train models—into the owner of the marketplace where those models are hosted. While this integration could accelerate the adoption of open models by providing them with more capital and compute resources, it has sparked concerns regarding the neutrality of the platform.
Critics argue that the acquisition could compromise the open-source ecosystem. Sid Nag, Founder and CRO of Tekonyx, noted that the primary concern is that an important neutral marketplace could gradually become an Nvidia-centered distribution channel. Such a shift would potentially prioritize Nvidia's own software and hardware optimizations over those of its competitors.
The Future of AI Distribution
Despite these concerns, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has emphasized the necessity of a diverse AI landscape. "The world will need both closed models and open models," Huang stated, noting that the use of both formats is currently skyrocketing.
Industry observers will now watch how Nvidia manages the independence of Hugging Face. The central question remains whether the platform can maintain its status as a vendor-neutral hub or if it will evolve into a proprietary gateway designed to lock developers into the Nvidia stack.
