Taiwanese AI infrastructure and cloud provider Konst has signed a collaboration agreement to lease capacity at the SMX01 data center in Jakarta, Indonesia. The move marks a strategic expansion of the company's computing power footprint into the Southeast Asian market.

The agreement was formalized during a signing ceremony in Taipei, which included Konst co-founder and chairman Ben Chang. Under the terms of the deal, Konst will utilize capacity at the SMX01 facility, which is operated by LG Sinar Mas (LGSM). LGSM is a 50:50 joint venture between South Korea's LG CNS and SM+, the digital infrastructure arm of the Indonesian conglomerate Sinar Mas.

The Shift Toward AI-Native Infrastructure

Indonesia is currently experiencing a surge in the development of AI-native data centers to meet the escalating regional demand for high-density workloads. Traditional data center architectures often struggle with the power and cooling requirements of modern AI clusters, leading to a shift toward specialized facilities. LG Sinar Mas is positioning the SMX01 facility as a next-generation hub designed specifically for AI infrastructure, incorporating smart power redundancy and seismic protection to ensure stability for critical workloads.

Strategic Implications for the Region

This partnership signals a broader trend of Taiwanese AI infrastructure firms aggressively entering Southeast Asia to establish the physical layer required for AI cloud services. By leveraging the combined strengths of Korean technical expertise via LG CNS and the deep local resources of Sinar Mas, Konst is able to bypass the complexities of greenfield development in a new territory. This collaboration highlights how cross-border joint ventures are becoming the primary vehicle for deploying the massive hardware investments needed to support generative AI and large-scale machine learning across Asia.

Future Outlook

As Konst integrates its services into the SMX01 facility, the industry will be watching for further expansions by Taiwanese cloud providers into the region. The success of this lease will likely serve as a blueprint for how AI-native providers scale their physical presence in emerging markets. While the immediate focus remains on the Jakarta deployment, the partnership between LG CNS and Sinar Mas suggests a long-term commitment to building out the high-density infrastructure necessary to sustain Indonesia's growing digital economy.
