The financial implications are equally significant; Juniper Research forecasts that agentic commerce could generate $1.5 trillion in global transaction value by 2030. These figures suggest a future where the volume of AI-to-AI transactions could potentially dwarf traditional human-led commerce.
The Failure of Traditional Banking
The primary catalyst for this shift is the fundamental incompatibility between AI agents and the legacy banking system. Traditional financial institutions rely on strict Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols, which require human identity verification to open and maintain accounts. Because autonomous agents lack legal personhood and government-issued identification, they are effectively locked out of the traditional banking sector.
To solve this, industry leaders are looking toward blockchain technology. Yat Siu describes cryptocurrency as the "perfect machine banking system," noting that crypto wallets provide the only viable infrastructure for agents to own, hold, and spend assets autonomously without requiring a human intermediary or a traditional bank account.
The Geopolitical Stakes
As this machine economy grows, the choice of currency becomes a matter of global strategic importance. There is an ongoing debate regarding the risk of relying on currencies pegged to specific national interests, such as the U.S. Dollar or the Chinese Yuan. The emergence of a neutral, non-fiat digital asset could mitigate geopolitical friction, preventing any single nation from controlling the financial rails of AI-to-AI trade.
