Bitcoin liquidity hits lowest level since 2019 as demand vanishes

Thin spot exchange volume and flat stablecoin reserves leave the market vulnerable to sharp price swings.

Bitcoin is navigating a period of unusually thin liquidity and a notable absence of buyer demand, leaving the cryptocurrency vulnerable to outsized price swings. According to on-chain analytics firm Glassnode, the market has entered a "liquidity-squeeze" phase that could precede a significant expansion in volatility.

Spot exchange volume has plummeted to its lowest level since the data series began in early 2019, signaling a collapse in active trading participation. This lack of activity is compounded by flat stablecoin reserves on exchanges, which Glassnode suggests indicates a lack of fresh capital being positioned for accumulation. Currently, Bitcoin is trading in a tight range between the Median Realized Price of $63,000 and the Short-Term Holder Cost Basis of $68,700.

Market Compression and Macro Pressures

This liquidity drought follows nearly three months of Bitcoin trading within a narrow price pocket characterized by compressing volatility. This stagnation has persisted despite broader macroeconomic catalysts. While such data often triggers market reactions, the current environment has failed to produce a strong bullish response, further reinforcing the narrative that demand is missing from the market.

The Volatility Inflection Point

The current market structure is critical because low liquidity means that even modest buying or selling pressure can trigger disproportionate price movements. Glassnode describes this as a "classic setup for a volatility expansion," noting that participation levels this low rarely persist for long.

For investors, this creates a high-stakes inflection point. A break above the $68,700 short-term holder cost basis could lead to a test of overhead supply, while a slide below the $63,000 median realized price could trigger a rapid decline. The lack of a liquidity cushion means there are fewer buffers to slow a move in either direction.

Signs of Seller Exhaustion

Despite the lack of demand, there are signs that downward pressure is waning. The Seller Exhaustion Constant has reached its weakest readings since 2013, suggesting that the pool of active sellers is fading. However, Glassnode warns that while sellers are "visibly tiring," the market has not yet experienced the deep, final capitulation flush that typically marks the absolute bottom of previous bear markets. Traders are now watching to see if a new wave of demand emerges to fill the void or if the lack of liquidity will facilitate one final sharp drop.
