Institutional ETF Demand Clashes With Heavy Selling Pressure in Bitcoin Tug-of-War

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs absorbed 13,300 BTC in a single week, yet a massive supply overhang continues to cap price growth.

Bitcoin is currently locked in a high-stakes battle between aggressive institutional accumulation and persistent liquidation from legacy holders. While U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs are creating a powerful new demand floor, the asset's price growth remains constrained by a significant supply overhang in the $62,000 to $65,000 range.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $865.3 million in net inflows over five consecutive sessions, marking the strongest weekly performance since April. This institutional appetite resulted in the absorption of approximately 13,300 BTC—a figure that exceeds the network's new production of 3,150 BTC by more than four times. Despite this massive imbalance in favor of buyers, Bitcoin's price gains remained modest, rising slightly over 2% during a period when the S&P 500 climbed 3.58%.

The Sources of Selling Pressure

The containment of Bitcoin's price is largely attributed to strategic liquidations and a dense cluster of holders looking to exit. One notable example is the company Strategy, which sold 1,638 BTC for approximately $104.7 million. The sale occurred at an average price of $63,957, with the proceeds used to fund share repurchases and preferred dividends.

Beyond individual corporate sales, the market is facing a broader structural challenge. An estimated 1.79 million BTC are held by investors with cost bases between $62,000 and $65,000. This creates a substantial supply overhang, as a large volume of holders are incentivized to sell as the price enters this specific range to break even or secure modest profits.

Macroeconomic Backdrop

This internal market struggle is unfolding against a backdrop of shifting U.S. economic indicators. Recent data showed that July nonfarm payrolls fell by 23,000, while the unemployment rate dipped to 4.1%. These cooler employment figures have reduced market expectations for immediate Federal Reserve rate hikes, generally favoring risk assets. However, the disparity between the S&P 500's growth and Bitcoin's more muted performance underscores the intensity of the selling pressure currently offsetting ETF demand.

The Path to $65,000

This tension illustrates a critical phase in Bitcoin's price discovery. The ability of the asset to break decisively above the $65,000 threshold depends on whether institutional inflows can consistently outweigh the liquidation efforts of corporate entities and legacy holders.

Market analysts suggest that a breakout above $65,000 is possible if ETF demand remains strong while long-term yields and inflation continue to ease. For now, the market remains a tug-of-war, with the outcome depending on whether the institutional floor is strong enough to absorb the millions of BTC waiting to be sold in the current price bracket.
