Bitcoin Miners Cut Hashrate to Pivot Toward AI Infrastructure

Public Bitcoin mining companies are strategically decommissioning their mining fleets to repurpose critical power and data center infrastructure for High-Performance Computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence. This shift represents a fundamental reallocation of capital as firms trade volatile mining rewards for the stable, high-density demands of AI GPU workloads.
Several major industry players have already recorded significant drops in their realized hashrate to facilitate this transition. IREN saw its realized hashrate fall from 42.96 EH/s to 35.83 EH/s due to AI retrofitting. Similarly, Cipher Digital's realized hashrate dropped from 16.55 EH/s to 11.14 EH/s, a decline specifically tied to the decommissioning of its Black Pearl facility to make room for AI infrastructure.
The Infrastructure Advantage
Historically, public miners competed solely to increase their network hashrate. However, the rise of generative AI has created an acute global shortage of high-density power and specialized data center space. Because Bitcoin miners already control the most difficult-to-acquire assets—power substations and industrial cooling systems—they are uniquely positioned to pivot. By swapping mining rigs for AI servers, these companies can leverage existing permits and power contracts to enter the HPC market more quickly than traditional data center developers.
Financial Implications
This pivot is not without immediate accounting costs. Core Scientific recorded a $266.5 million impairment charge in the first quarter of 2026, reflecting the write-down of assets as the company shifted its focus. This charge included $151.6 million for mining equipment and $114.9 million for infrastructure, a move driven by the company's decision to prioritize colocation services for CoreWeave.
A Divergent Industry
This trend signals a structural divergence within the industrial mining landscape. The decommissioning of hashrate is not a sign of capitulation to Bitcoin's price volatility, but rather a strategic move toward higher-return AI infrastructure. As a result, the sector is splitting into two distinct groups: firms evolving into AI-first data center operators and a smaller cohort of dedicated miners who may capture a larger share of the network as their competitors exit.

Industry observers are now monitoring how quickly these retrofits can be completed and whether the resulting AI revenue can fully offset the loss of mining income.
