Bitcoin is approaching a technical deadline that could potentially split the network into two separate chains. The conflict centers on BIP110, a consensus protocol change designed to limit the size of OP_RETURN data to reduce blockchain bloat.

The tension arises from a divide between the network's primary software implementations. BIP110 has been implemented in Bitcoin Knots, but it has not been adopted by Bitcoin Core, the most widely used client. A mandatory signaling window is set to occur between block 961,632 and block 963,647. During this window, nodes enforcing BIP110—such as those running Bitcoin Knots—will reject any blocks that do not signal support for the upgrade via bit 4.

The Technical Divide

This situation highlights a fundamental conflict regarding how the Bitcoin network should handle data storage and consensus upgrades. While BIP110 seeks to restrict certain data types to keep the ledger lean, the lack of adoption by Bitcoin Core means the majority of the network is not aligned with the proposal. This creates a scenario where a minority of nodes may view the majority of the network's blocks as invalid, and vice versa.

Market and Network Implications

If a significant minority of miners choose to enforce the new rules while the majority do not, the network could experience a chain split. Such an event would create two separate versions of Bitcoin, which would likely cause significant confusion for users, custodians, and cryptocurrency exchanges.

However, the likelihood of a major split appears low based on current data. Miner signaling support for BIP110 has been reported as critically low, with various sources citing figures between 0% and 2.4%, including reports of support falling below 1%. Because the vast majority of miners are not signaling for the change, the main network is expected to remain unaffected.

What to Watch

Despite the low signaling rates, the window remains a point of volatility. Users of Bitcoin Knots may find their nodes becoming unusable if they continue to enforce rules that the rest of the network ignores. Alternatively, if a persistent minority of miners continues to support the upgrade, a permanent "forkcoin" could be created. Observers will be monitoring the block range starting at 961,632 to see if any meaningful shift in miner behavior occurs or if the proposal fails entirely as expected by some analysts.
