Bitcoin Suisse Cuts 60 Swiss Jobs in Pivot to Global Wealth Management

The Crypto Valley pioneer is offshoring back-office operations to Slovakia and Vietnam to fuel international expansion.

Bitcoin Suisse is eliminating up to 60 positions at its headquarters in Zug, Switzerland, as it shifts its operational focus toward global markets. The move marks a significant departure from the firm's historical concentration on the Swiss domestic market.

To reduce overhead costs, the company is relocating back-office operations to Bratislava, Slovakia, and a new site in Vietnam. This restructuring supports a strategic pivot, transitioning the firm from a regional brokerage into a global provider of crypto-native wealth management services. Andrej Majcen, Group CEO and co-founder of Bitcoin Suisse, stated that while the company previously focused mainly on Switzerland, international growth is now the priority. Majcen noted that the firm intends to leverage its crypto experience to offer international clients wealth and asset management services that extend beyond digital assets.

A Shift in Regulatory Strategy

Founded in 2013 by Niklas Nikolajsen, Bitcoin Suisse was an early architect of Switzerland's "Crypto Valley." For years, the firm sought to integrate deeply into the Swiss financial establishment, though this path met with regulatory hurdles. In 2021, the company withdrew its application for a Swiss banking license following concerns from the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) regarding anti-money laundering (AML) measures.

Rather than continuing to pursue a domestic banking charter, the firm spent 2026 aggressively expanding its regulatory footprint abroad. In a rapid series of approvals, Bitcoin Suisse secured licenses in Bermuda in May, Liechtenstein in June, and Abu Dhabi in July. These licenses provide the legal framework necessary to operate across diverse jurisdictions and serve a more varied global clientele.

Implications for the Crypto Industry

The restructuring signals a maturing phase for crypto-native firms, which are increasingly adopting the operational models of traditional global banks. By offshoring administrative and back-office functions to lower-cost hubs in Eastern Europe and Asia, Bitcoin Suisse is optimizing its cost structure to compete on a global scale. This allows the firm to pivot its high-value human capital toward sophisticated offerings, such as portfolio management and hedging, rather than simple trading and custody.

Future Outlook

As Bitcoin Suisse integrates its new international licenses, the industry will be watching whether this "global-first" model can successfully scale without the anchor of a primary domestic banking license. While the firm has clarified its strategic direction and operational shifts, the full impact of the Zug headquarters' downsizing remains to be seen as the company executes its transition to a global wealth management partner.
