Bitcoin Suisse to Cut Swiss Workforce by Half in Global Pivot

The crypto firm is shifting engineering and back-office roles to international hubs while keeping wealth management in Zug.

Bitcoin Suisse is planning to reduce its Swiss-based workforce by up to 50%, signaling a major strategic pivot toward a distributed global operating model. The restructuring aims to optimize costs and improve access to international talent by decoupling operational functions from its regulatory base.

According to company reports, up to 60 employees in Switzerland face redundancy, representing roughly half of the local workforce of 120. Bitcoin Suisse stated that its software development and back-office capabilities will increasingly be consolidated in its international hubs. As part of this transition, the firm will close its IT site in Copenhagen. To support the new structure, the company is maintaining its existing hub in Bratislava, Slovakia, and plans to establish a new international hub in Vietnam.

The Shift to Distributed Operations

Founded in 2013, Bitcoin Suisse has established itself as a provider of crypto trading, custody, staking, and lending. While the firm is expanding its operational footprint, it is maintaining its headquarters and wealth management base in Zug, Switzerland. This decision allows the firm to retain the prestige and regulatory advantages of the Swiss jurisdiction for its high-trust, client-facing services while offloading technical overhead to lower-cost regions.

The move comes as the firm continues to navigate a complex regulatory landscape. Bitcoin Suisse has a history of friction with Swiss authorities, most notably in 2021 when it withdrew a banking license application after the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) raised concerns regarding anti-money-laundering controls. In recent years, the company has sought to diversify its regulated footprint, expanding into Liechtenstein, Bermuda, and the UAE.

Industry Implications

This restructuring reflects a broader maturation trend within the cryptocurrency sector. Many firms that launched with a borderless ethos are now adopting disciplined corporate cost-management strategies typical of traditional financial institutions. By separating high-value wealth management from engineering and back-office support, Bitcoin Suisse is attempting to balance the high cost of Swiss compliance with the efficiency of global labor markets.

What to Watch

The primary focus moving forward will be the successful migration of technical operations to the Bratislava and Vietnam hubs without disrupting service for its wealth management clients. Market observers will also be watching to see if this cost-cutting measure is a precursor to further expansions or a defensive move to stabilize the balance sheet amid shifting market conditions.
