Bitmine Nears 5% Ethereum Supply Target With $19.6 Million Purchase

The company has amassed 5.8 million ETH and continues a multi-billion dollar share buyback program.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · August 4, 2026

Bitmine Immersion Technologies has expanded its cryptocurrency treasury, acquiring 10,399 ETH and repurchasing 4.5 million shares of its common stock. This latest move accelerates the company's aggressive push to secure a massive institutional footprint within the Ethereum ecosystem.

The recent ETH acquisition was valued at approximately $19.6 million. This purchase extends a weekly accumulation streak that has brought Bitmine's total holdings to approximately 5.8 million tokens, representing about 4.8% of Ethereum's total circulating supply. Simultaneously, the company is executing a $4 billion share buyback plan, having retired a total of 16.1 million shares since July 1, 2026.

The 'Alchemy of 5%' Strategy

Led by Chairman Tom Lee, Bitmine has shifted its corporate treasury strategy toward a goal the company calls the "Alchemy of 5%." The objective is to own 5% of the total circulating supply of Ethereum. To monetize this hoard, Bitmine has staked approximately 4.9 million ETH to generate annualized revenue. This dual approach of accumulation and staking allows the company to build a dominant position while creating a consistent income stream from its digital assets. Bitmine's total crypto and cash assets are now valued at approximately $11.3 billion.

Market Implications and Equity Value

By combining massive treasury accumulation with a large-scale share buyback, Bitmine is attempting to create a symbiotic value loop between the price of Ethereum and its own equity value (BMNR). This strategy effectively turns the company into a leveraged bet on the Ethereum ecosystem. Tom Lee noted that the buyback reflects management's confidence in the company's valuation, specifically citing a period in July where Ethereum outperformed the Nasdaq 100 by 25 percentage points.

Future Outlook

With its current holdings at 4.8% of the circulating supply, Bitmine is now within striking distance of its 5% target. Investors and market analysts are watching to see if the company will maintain its weekly accumulation pace or if the $4 billion buyback program will prioritize equity support over further crypto acquisitions as it nears its strategic goal. While the company's total asset value is clear, the exact average acquisition cost of its ETH holdings remains a point of variation across different financial reports.
