Mastercard and Backbase Partner to Scale Agentic AI Across Global Banking
The collaboration integrates Mastercard's analytics and risk tools into Backbase's operating system to move banks from AI pilots to production.
Mastercard and Backbase have launched a strategic collaboration to integrate core service pillars into an AI-native Banking Operating System (OS). The move is designed to shift financial institutions from the phase of AI experimentation into active "AI execution" within production environments.
Under the agreement, four of Mastercard's primary capabilities are being embedded directly into the Backbase platform: Dynamic Yield for personalization, Test & Learn for assessing commercial impact, SpendingPulse for macroeconomic spending insights, and Cyber Quant for cyber risk assessment. This integration provides immediate access to these tools for the more than 120 banks across 50 countries that currently utilize Backbase, including KeyBank, TD Bank, and Navy Federal Credit Union. Additionally, Belize Bank is already deploying the AI-native Banking OS across its digital lending, SME, and retail sectors to replace fragmented legacy workflows.
The Shift to Agentic Banking
For several years, financial institutions have piloted AI primarily for marketing and fraud detection. However, embedding these tools into core operating processes has remained difficult due to fragmented legacy systems. The industry is now pivoting toward "agentic banking," a model where AI systems are governed by secure infrastructure and can act autonomously on behalf of customers within defined consent parameters, moving beyond the capabilities of a standard chatbot.
Selin Bahadırlı Çağlan, Executive Vice President of Services for EEMEA at Mastercard, noted that the infrastructure supporting this shift is critical, stating, "This is how agentic banking moves from proof of concept to production."
Industry Implications
This partnership lowers the technical barrier for banks by embedding advanced AI capabilities into an existing operating layer, removing the need for institutions to build separate AI environments from the ground up. For Mastercard, the deal expands its presence into the daily technology environments of banks, moving beyond its traditional role in payment and card services.
Ricardo Ribelles, VP of Collaborations and Alliances at Backbase, described the move as a combination of two ecosystems that provides banks with a "faster, more trusted path" toward real business outcomes. For the broader financial sector, the collaboration signals a transition toward "agentic commerce," where AI agents can securely handle regulated banking transactions.
