Nomura’s Laser Digital Backs ZIGChain to Tokenize UAE Private Credit
The strategic partnership aims to bring SME private credit and receivables on-chain to expand institutional access in the Gulf region.
Laser Digital, a subsidiary of Nomura, has entered into a strategic partnership and provided financial backing to ZIGChain to facilitate the movement of private credit on-chain in the United Arab Emirates. The initiative focuses on the tokenization of real-world assets (RWA), specifically targeting the SME sector to modernize how private lending is accessed and managed.
As part of this push, ZIGChain has partnered with Beehive, a DFSA-regulated SME funding platform, to tokenize UAE SME private credit. This collaboration is designed to expand institutional access to private credit markets across the Gulf region. Beyond the Beehive partnership, ZIGChain is also collaborating with Abhi and Zignaly to tokenize SME receivables using stablecoin capital, creating a broader ecosystem for on-chain finance.
The Shift Toward RWA Tokenization
This development occurs amid a growing trend in the UAE to migrate traditional financial instruments onto blockchain networks. By positioning itself as "Wealth Generation Infrastructure," ZIGChain aims to bridge the gap between institutional investment and regulatory-ready blockchain environments. The integration of stablecoins for SME receivables reflects a broader regional effort to increase the velocity of capital and reduce the friction associated with traditional private credit underwriting.
Institutional Implications
The involvement of a Nomura-backed entity like Laser Digital signals a transition from experimental blockchain pilots to institutional execution. By targeting the UAE's SME credit market, the partnership provides a concrete use case for Layer-1 blockchains within traditional finance. This shift is expected to increase liquidity and transparency for private credit in the Middle East, allowing institutional investors to engage with SME funding at a scale previously hindered by manual processes.
Peter Tavener, CEO and co-founder of Beehive, noted that the platform was built as a digital-first private credit platform and has already demonstrated its ability to originate, underwrite, and service SME funding at scale.
Future Outlook
Market observers will now watch for the actual volume of assets migrated on-chain and the subsequent impact on SME borrowing costs in the region. While the strategic backing from Laser Digital is confirmed, the specific financial terms of the investment remain undisclosed. The success of this initiative will likely depend on the continued alignment between ZIGChain’s infrastructure and the UAE's evolving regulatory framework for digital assets.
