Vitalik Buterin Rejects Prediction That AI Could Crash Bitcoin by 50%
The Ethereum co-founder argues that Bitcoin's core security is resilient against AI-driven attacks.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has dismissed a prediction that artificial intelligence could undermine Bitcoin's security and trigger a massive price collapse. The debate highlights a growing tension over whether AI will primarily empower attackers or defenders in the race to secure decentralized networks.
The disagreement began when investor Liron Shapira predicted that Bitcoin's price would drop by more than 50% within two years due to AI-related security threats. Shapira assigned a 50% confidence level to this forecast, suggesting that AI's ability to find vulnerabilities could fundamentally compromise the network. Buterin rejected this outlook, stating that the probability of actual breaks on Bitcoin's hashes or its Proof-of-Work (PoW) mechanism is "tiny."
The Defense Against AI
Buterin's optimism is rooted in the distinction between fundamental cryptographic breaks and operational vulnerabilities. While AI may accelerate the discovery of software flaws, Buterin argues that most threats—including network-layer attacks, client vulnerabilities, and issues within mining infrastructure—can be resolved through ordinary software upgrades. Crucially, he noted that these fixes can be implemented without the need for "social consensus," the complex and often slow process of getting a decentralized community to agree on a fundamental change to the protocol.
"I take the opposite side of that," Buterin said regarding the crash prediction. "My basic reasons are that I am quite optimistic about cybersecurity in the long term and I see the primary problem as being getting the transition, and I expect BTC to handle at least any issues that do not require social consensus well."
Industry-Wide Concerns
Despite Buterin's confidence, the broader digital-asset industry is taking a precautionary approach to the "transition risk" of AI. Generative AI has already shown an ability to automate the discovery of software bugs and enhance phishing attempts, though it has not yet demonstrated the capacity to break established cryptographic functions like SHA-256.
In response to these emerging threats, a coalition of more than 40 digital-asset organizations, including Coinbase, Block, and Galaxy, has taken collective action. The group has requested that AI laboratories provide security teams with early access to advanced models. The goal is to ensure that defenders have the same tools as AI-assisted attackers, allowing them to patch vulnerabilities before they can be exploited on a large scale.
The Stakes of the Debate
This tension underscores a critical question for the crypto-AI intersection: whether the speed of AI-driven vulnerability discovery will outpace the ability of decentralized networks to patch them. While standard software updates can handle most bugs, a fundamental break in Bitcoin's cryptography would necessitate a migration based on social consensus. Such a move would be significantly more risky and complex than a routine upgrade, potentially creating the instability that critics like Shapira fear.
For now, the industry remains split between those who view AI as an existential threat to legacy cryptography and those who believe the evolution of AI-enhanced code review and rapid patching will keep the networks secure.
