Walmart-backed OnePay launches 'My Garage' to unify vehicle financial tracking

The new free dashboard integrates real-time valuations and loan tracking to help drivers manage car ownership costs.

Walmart-backed fintech OnePay has launched "My Garage," a free integrated feature designed to centralize vehicle-related finances within its app. The tool aims to eliminate the need for users to toggle between separate banking, insurance, and loan servicing platforms.

The dashboard allows users to track their vehicle's current market value, loan balances, and payoff timelines in one location. To provide these insights, My Garage utilizes J.D. Power data for real-time valuations and connects to users' credit reports via OnePay's free credit monitoring service to automatically track auto loan balances. Beyond tracking, the feature includes a map of gas offers at participating stations, an insurance shopping tool, and the ability to set specific savings goals for maintenance items such as brakes and tires.

The push for a financial 'everything app'

OnePay is positioning itself as a comprehensive financial hub, reducing the friction of managing multiple specialized accounts. The introduction of My Garage follows a series of expansions, including the addition of wireless plan management, as the company deepens its integration with the broader Walmart ecosystem. According to Pat McLoughlin, OnePay's GM of Marketplace, the car represents a significant financial component of a user's life, yet there has historically been no single place to manage those specific finances.

Addressing the 'underwater' car crisis

The launch comes at a time of significant volatility in the used car market. Data from Edmunds indicates that nearly 30% of trade-ins were "underwater" in the second quarter, meaning the owners owed more on their loans than the vehicles were actually worth. By providing a transparent, single-view dashboard, OnePay intends to help consumers avoid financial surprises when visiting dealerships for trade-ins or sales.

Strategic value and ownership

For OnePay, the feature is designed as a value-add to increase user retention and app "stickiness" rather than serving as a primary direct revenue stream. Thomas Hoare, OnePay's Chief Commercial Officer, stated that the company approached the development of the garage from the perspective of ownership rather than advertising.

What to watch

As OnePay continues to integrate more lifestyle and financial management tools, the industry will be watching how these features impact user loyalty within the Walmart ecosystem. While the core financial tracking is now live, it remains to be seen how the insurance comparison tool will scale and whether the integration of more third-party data providers will expand the dashboard's capabilities.
