XRP Ledger One Vote Away from Batch V1.1 Payments Upgrade

The network needs 28 of 35 trusted validator votes to reach the 80% consensus required for transaction grouping.

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is on the verge of implementing a significant payments upgrade known as Batch V1.1. The protocol change is currently awaiting a final validator vote to meet the strict consensus threshold required for network-wide deployment.

According to CoinDesk, the upgrade requires 80% support from trusted validators to take effect. Currently, 27 out of 35 trusted validators have expressed their support for the change. Because 28 votes are required to reach the 80% mark, the network remains exactly one vote shy of the necessary threshold to trigger the implementation.

The Mechanics of Batch V1.1

Once approved, Batch V1.1 will introduce a new capability allowing users to group up to eight related transactions into a single operation. This shift moves the ledger away from a strictly one-by-one transaction model for related activities, streamlining how data and value are moved across the chain.

Launched in 2012, the XRP Ledger was designed specifically for payments using a decentralized public Layer 1 blockchain. Unlike many networks governed by a central authority or simple majority, the XRPL utilizes a rigorous consensus mechanism. This ensures that any major protocol changes are agreed upon by a supermajority of validators, prioritizing network stability and trust over rapid, unilateral updates.

Impact on Scalability

This upgrade is expected to significantly increase the efficiency of the ledger by reducing the total number of individual transactions required for complex operations. By consolidating up to eight transactions into one, the network can lower operational overhead and improve overall scalability.

For the broader market, these improvements make the XRPL more attractive for institutional users and high-volume payment use cases. Reducing the friction of complex payment flows allows the network to handle larger workloads with greater precision, positioning it more competitively for enterprise-grade financial services.

Next Steps for the Network

Attention now turns to the remaining validators to see if the final vote is cast to reach the 28-vote requirement. While the technical specifications of Batch V1.1 are set, the timing of the rollout depends entirely on this decentralized voting process. Once the 80% threshold is crossed, the network will move toward the formal activation of the grouping feature.
