Automakers pivot to EREVs to bridge the gap between gas and electric

Major brands are integrating onboard generators to eliminate range anxiety and solve towing hurdles for electric vehicles.

Automakers are increasingly integrating internal combustion engines back into electric vehicle designs through a configuration known as Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs). This strategic shift aims to bridge the gap between full battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids for consumers hesitant to go fully electric.

Unlike traditional hybrids, an EREV uses a fuel-powered generator solely to recharge the traction battery when it is depleted. The internal combustion engine never directly drives the wheels; instead, the electric motors provide all the propulsion. Major brands, including Hyundai, Ram, and Scout, are preparing to launch EREV models to capture this middle ground. For example, Scout's upcoming Traveler SUV is planned to offer 350 miles of pure EV range, which increases to over 500 miles when equipped with the "Harvester" EREV range extender. Scout CEO Scott Keogh noted that while zero-to-60 times may be slightly slower, the configuration ensures "100 percent gradeability" and robust towing capability.

The Towing Hurdle

This pivot is driven largely by the practical limitations of BEVs in heavy-duty applications. Towing significantly reduces the efficiency of pure electric vehicles, leading to a severe drop in range during heavy hauling. Beyond efficiency, the physical infrastructure of charging stations presents a logistical nightmare for those pulling trailers. Sam Abuelsamid, VP of market research at Telemetry Insights, points out that many charging stations feature back-in bays, meaning drivers would likely have to disconnect their trailers, pull in to charge, and then re-hook the vehicle before continuing. EREVs eliminate this inconvenience by allowing for traditional refueling.

A Strategic Retreat

The industry's move toward EREVs comes as manufacturers face mounting challenges with BEV adoption. Range anxiety, inadequate charging infrastructure in rural areas, and the loss of federal tax credits have slowed the transition to pure electric transport. By offering a powertrain that maintains the electric driving experience while providing the refueling convenience of a gas vehicle, companies hope to attract a broader segment of the market.

The Path Forward

This shift suggests a strategic retreat from the "all-in" BEV approach previously championed by many major OEMs. While EREVs increase overall electrification, they may simultaneously slow the transition to zero-emission transport by extending the reliance on fossil fuels. Industry observers will be watching to see if this "bridge" technology becomes a permanent fixture in the truck and SUV segments or serves as a temporary measure until charging grids catch up to consumer needs.
