Bafang Debuts RS Motors with 1,700W Peak Power for Extreme e-MTBs

The M510RS and M560RS drives feature 800% pedal assistance and high-speed IMU sensors for technical terrain.

Bafang has announced the production versions of its M510RS and M560RS electric mountain bike motors, designed to push the boundaries of climbing capability. These high-performance drives debut at the Italian Bike Festival from September 4-6, with series production scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.

The flagship M560RS motor is engineered for extreme output, delivering up to 1,700W of peak power in its 48V configuration and 150 Nm of torque when utilizing the "Boost-to-Limit" mode. The M510RS serves as a more moderate alternative, offering a standard peak torque of 110 Nm that increases to 120-130 Nm in Boost-to-Limit mode. Depending on the voltage, the M510RS provides peak power between 1,100W for 36V systems and 1,300W for 48V systems. The Boost-to-Limit function allows for 800% assistance, meaning the motor can contribute eight times the rider's own physical input.

Precision Control for Technical Terrain

To manage this massive increase in power, Bafang integrated a sophisticated sensor suite into both models. Each motor utilizes a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) alongside torque, cadence, and wheel-speed sensors. This configuration allows the RS series to react 50% faster than the standard M510 and M560 models, ensuring power delivery remains stable on loose or technical surfaces. Bafang reports that these systems were refined through more than 4,000 hours of fine-tuning under racing and trail conditions.

Industry Implications

This launch signals a shift toward extreme power levels in the e-MTB sector, as manufacturers move beyond traditional street-legal limits to cater to enthusiast mountain bikers. By combining high peak wattage with high-speed IMU-based metering, Bafang is attempting to solve the inherent conflict between extreme power and traction control. Furthermore, the RS motors maintain the same mounting interfaces as the existing M510 and M560 models, a strategic move intended to lower the barrier for bike manufacturers to adopt the new hardware into existing frame designs.

What to Watch

As the industry sees increased competition from other high-output systems, such as DJI's Avinox drive, the market will be watching how these motors perform in real-world consumer applications. While the technical specifications are confirmed, the primary focus now shifts to which bike brands will be the first to integrate the RS series into their 2027 lineups following the Q4 production rollout.
