NCBA and BasiGo to Finance 1,000 Electric Public Transport Vehicles in Kenya

The strategic partnership aims to accelerate Kenya's transition to zero-emission transport by lowering financial barriers for PSV operators.

NCBA Group and BasiGo have entered into a strategic partnership to expand financing for electric public transport vehicles across Kenya. The initiative is designed to accelerate the adoption of green energy in the transport sector by providing accessible credit to operators.

Under the terms of the partnership, the two organizations are targeting the financing of 1,000 electric vehicles. This funding is specifically earmarked for public service vehicle (PSV) operators, businesses, and institutions. To make the transition viable, the financing structure includes both asset finance and leasing options, which are intended to lower the high upfront costs typically associated with electric vehicle acquisition.

The Barrier to Entry

Electric buses and vans generally command a higher initial purchase price than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. For many Kenyan transport operators, this price gap creates a significant barrier to entry, regardless of the long-term operational savings. BasiGo has previously addressed this through its "Pay-As-You-Drive" model, but the integration of a major regional financial institution like NCBA allows for a more scalable approach to credit and ownership.

Impact on Urban Mobility

This partnership represents a significant scaling of green financing within the East African transport sector. By removing the primary financial hurdle, the initiative could rapidly increase the number of zero-emission vehicles on the roads in Nairobi and other major Kenyan cities. For the public, this transition promises a reduction in urban air pollution. For the drivers and operators, the shift to electric power is expected to lower daily operational costs compared to diesel-powered alternatives.

The Road Ahead

As the deployment of these 1,000 vehicles begins, the industry will be watching how the leasing and asset finance models perform in a real-world PSV environment. The success of this collaboration may serve as a blueprint for other regional banks to engage in green financing, potentially triggering a wider shift toward sustainable public infrastructure across the region.
