Hyundai to Launch Santa Fe EREV With 600-Mile Combined Range
The automaker is pivoting toward extended-range electric technology to bridge the gap for buyers hesitant about full electrification.
Hyundai is expanding its electrification strategy with the introduction of an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) version of the Santa Fe. The announcement, made during the company's 2026 CEO Investor Day in Seoul, signals a strategic shift to address consumer range anxiety while maintaining a commitment to electric propulsion.
The upcoming Santa Fe EREV will combine a high-voltage battery with a gasoline engine that functions exclusively as an onboard generator. According to Hyundai, this configuration will allow the vehicle to achieve more than 600 miles of combined range on a full battery charge and a single tank of fuel. Production is scheduled to begin next year at Hyundai's manufacturing facility in Alabama, USA.
The EREV Strategy
Unlike traditional plug-in hybrids, where the internal combustion engine can directly drive the wheels, an EREV uses the engine solely to charge the battery. This ensures the driving experience remains entirely electric regardless of the fuel level. To support this, Hyundai is utilizing its own high-nickel battery cells. The company claims these cells reduce charging times by 40% and require less than half the battery capacity of a comparable full battery electric vehicle (BEV) to achieve similar performance levels.
Market Implications
This move comes as the growth of full BEVs has slowed in the U.S. market. By leveraging EREV technology, Hyundai is targeting a specific segment of buyers—particularly those who tow or haul heavy loads—who may be deterred by the charging infrastructure requirements of full EVs. This approach allows the automaker to advance its battery technology and maintain domestic production while offering a pragmatic transition for combustion-engine loyalists.
Future Roadmap
The Santa Fe is part of a broader aggressive expansion; Hyundai plans to launch 58 new or refreshed models in North America by 2030. The company's sister brands are following suit. Genesis is expected to launch an EREV SUV before the end of the decade featuring more than 640 miles of range. Additionally, Kia has plans to introduce a Telluride EREV in 2029, followed by an extended-range pickup truck in 2030.
